Documentary Feature
As a multi-instrumentalist, Pat Spurgeon is an integral part of the indie pop band Rogue Wave. They have performed all over the world, increasing their fan base with every tour in support of their three critically acclaimed albums to date. In addition to the excitement of his band's accomplishments, Pat has had to deal with kidney failure and the parameters that have been set for him by his situation. Pat has been dealing with his pre-existing condition most of his life. After the success of his first kidney transplant 13 years ago, the kidney started to fail just as Rogue Wave started to take off. The film chronicles Pat's search for a living organ donor and the challenges associated with finding a viable match. Pat's choice to keep touring and working toward the band's goals is put to the test; the absolute need to perform dialysis daily and to focus on his health become top priority while being on the road. D tour also addresses issues with the U.S. health care system, the lack of affordable insurance, the importance of organ donation, and much more. Featuring live performances from Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), Nada Surf, Ryan Miller (Guster), John Vanderslice, The Moore Brothers, and of course Rogue Wave." Take 5 with "Perfection"
Christina Beck
As we gear up for the Oxford Film Festival 2012 to be held at the Malco Studio Theater on Feb. 9-12, 2012 and also at the Lyric Theater on Saturday, Feb. 11 as part of the Oxford Music Festival line-up where we will show music films, videos and a panel on music + film, we thought we might introduce you to some of the people behind the movies we can't wait to show you. For the full schedule and description of the films, visit www.oxfordfilmfest.com.

Meet Take 5 filmmaker, Christina Beck of "Perfection"
Q. 1: In 140 characters or less, describe your movie and why someone should see it.
A:  Perfection is an unlikely love story about a woman Kristabelle, who is living with her self obsessed mother, Sally (Robyn Peterson) and cuts herself to feel some sort of connection. Things fall apart when she finally cuts too deep, their small world cracks open and from that Kristabelle starts to heal from her past and allows Simon ( David Melville) a British stand up comic see beyond her scars and into her heart. If you like character driven films with a sense of humor about the frailties of life that offer hope it may be your cup of tea!

Q. 2: Biggest lesson learned in getting the film made? Best part in getting the film made?
A: DON'T LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO TELL YOU "NO"! We basically never got funded so we just started shooting on the weekends while I was working a 40 hr a week day job. I had an amazing, devoted cast and crew and it took us 2 1/2 years to finish principle photography. God bless them and everything I learned from this life changing experience and the best part for me was to see how devoted I am to filmmaking and can't wait to do it all again!

Q. 3: Tell us about you. What is your movie making background?
A: :  Starting out as an actress, I have always been interested in telling stories about real women and as a filmmaker I’m thrilled to have a wider canvas to express my point of view, style and sensibility. I was very lucky to work with Penelope Spheeris on my first three films and she taught me it is possible to make cool independent films as a woman. I'm from Los Angeles but lived in NYC for many years to study, write, direct and act in theatre. I came back to LA, did more theatre, wrote short stories then short films and PERFECTION is my first feature.

Q. 4: What's your dream distribution plan for the film?
A:  I always intended to show the PERFECTION to as wide an audience as possible to inspire hope humor and healing. At this point we are just starting our festival run and as my next feature is set in France I'd like to have a wide release in Europe as well as the states.

Q. 5: What does the future hold in store for your film and for you?

A:  Depending how things go, I'd be happy with a VOD deal, pay our debts, screen the film for colleges, self injury groups and sell DVD's on our own. This is a crazy time in the world and I'm just so grateful I managed to make the movie I wanted to make. I'm looking forward to shooting my next feature, EXPECTING GRACE later this year!
Getting to know the film staff
As we are gearing up for the ninth annual film festival, we thought we'd introduce you to some of our staff members that are taking on new back of the house duties (making sure Q&A's run, making sure lights in theaters go off and on, etc). If you see them around, say hi!

Meet Detra Payne, Volunteer Coordinator with Kristin Rogers.
IN 5 WORDS, DESCRIBE YOU: Funny, Direct, Mothering, Passionate, Fabulous :-)
HOW LONG WITH FEST: This is my second year volunteering.
WHY VOLUNTEER: Because you meet great folks, see great art and support the new, unknown, wonderful talent in the world of film.
FAVORITE PART OF FEST: Watching the films but mostly meeting the artist behind the films.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THIS FEST: Having fun regardless of the challenges
CHALLENGES OF YOUR POSITION: Making sure we have the proper number of volunteers for each day in the areas I am assigned to take care of. I think if we have the fabulous dedicated volunteers I expect we will, it should be no problem.
DO YOU GO TO OTHER FESTS AND IF SO WHICH: I have been to a couple, they were the American Black Film Festival and the Palm Springs Film Festival.
ANY OTHER THOUGHTS ON THE FILM FEST: I hope this festival grows into one of the leaders in film festivals, and that this years is simply fun and runs smoothly.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THIS FEST: I am looking forward to an amazing film line-up this year and to working with all of the wonderful volunteers plus I am very excited for the Music Fest addition to this year’s festival!!
CHALLENGES OF YOUR POSITION: Organization in an extremely dynamic environment
DO YOU GO TO OTHER FESTS AND IF SO WHICH: MPLS underground Film Festival and the MPLS International Film Festival
ANY OTHER THOUGHTS ON THE FILM FEST: The Oxford Film Festival is an outstanding venue of both local and national films

Sherrod Taylor
Meet Sherrod Taylor, Volunteer Manager

HOW LONG WITH FEST:This is my 3rd year with the Oxford Film Festival.
WHY VOLUNTEER: Simply being a part of this awesome community effort is why I enjoy volunteering for the festival each year; set in Oxford, it has such incredible potential of becoming a premiere film festival of the United States.
FAVORITE PART OF FEST:My favorite part of the festival occurs when I sit in my seat in the dark theater, shoveling down a trough of popcorn and slurping Coke as I watch my favorite film of the weekend.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THIS FEST: I'm looking forward to watching the Greek Competition unravel throughout the festival.
CHALLENGES OF YOUR POSITION:The most challenging part of the festival is making sure the banner I built does not fall on the ticket sellers' head!
DO YOU GO TO OTHER FESTS AND IF SO WHICH: The only other film festival I attended was the Cannes Film Festival in France.
ANY OTHER THOUGHTS ON THE FILM FEST: I'm really glad to be a part of the Festival again this year, and I know it will be a huge success!

Kristin Rogers

Meet  Kristin Rogers, Volunteer Coordinator
IN 5 WORDS, DESCRIBE YOU: Outgoing, friendly, upbeat, dedicated, hardworking
HOW LONG WITH FEST: This is my 4th year, 2 years as a volunteer and 2 as a Volunteer Coordinator
WHY VOLUNTEER:  I started volunteering because it sounded fun and I love movies.  I do it now because I enjoy being part of something that I am able to take from nothing (pre-recruitment of volunteers) to a group of around 150 people who are the face of a festival that brings smiles to peoples faces
FAVORITE PART OF FEST:  Getting to know new people and working with them
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THIS FEST:  this year I would say 75% of our volunteers are first timers.  I look forward to working with them and seeing the fest through their eyes
CHALLENGES OF YOUR POSITION:  Scheduling for sure.  We use 100+ volunteers to staff a number of positions both pre-fest, during the fest, and post-fest.  The most challenging is the balance between scheduling people to do what they what when they are available with the needs of the festival.  I think we've done a really good job of that this year.
Take 5 with "Year of Our Lord"
As we gear up for the Oxford Film Festival 2012 to be held at the Malco Studio Theater on Feb. 9-12, 2012 and also at the Lyric Theater on Saturday, Feb. 11 as part of the Oxford Music Festival line-up where we will show music films, videos and a panel on music + film, we thought we might introduce you to some of the people behind the movies we can't wait to show you. For the full schedule and description of the films, visit www.oxfordfilmfest.com.

Meet Take 5 filmmaker, Thad Lee, Photographer and Editor

Q. 1: In 140 characters or less, describe your movie and why someone should see it.

A: The story of Lucas McCarty is reason enough, but understanding how Tom Pearson and Langdon Clay came to be part of it is rich. Plus, you'll hear some beautiful music.

Q. 2: Biggest lesson learned in getting the film made? Best part in getting the film made?

A: I learned you should always trust Julie Chadwick when she says, "I know some good people you should meet."  I guess the best part was witnessing Lucas, his church, Tom, Langdon, and Ashley embrace all the eyes on their document of communication, the Delta, Lucas McCarty, and the people who love him.

Q. 3: Tell us about you. What is your movie making background?

A: I made my first short film in 2001.

Q. 4: What's your dream distribution plan for the film?

A:  Channel 99.

Q. 5: What does the future hold in store for your film and for you?

A:  I'm not sure, but the book is good, and worth exploring more.
